Sport & Fun
Klagenfurt is Austria’s number one city of sports! There are well over 200 sports clubs for different sports. Apart from club sports, all of Klagenfurt is a single huge sports field for amateur sportspeople, both in summer and in winter. From tennis and inline skating to cycling, swimming, cross-country skiing and ice-skating – everything can be practised out in the open. Furthermore, there is a lit running course, a demanding fitness course on Kreuzbergl as well as trails of any difficulty level for Nordic walkers. Generously equipped sports and multipurpose buildings (2 ice stadiums, 5 indoor tennis centres, 5 indoor riding halls, 3 squash centres, 7 fitness centres, 1 indoor swimming pool and so on) are the icing on Klagenfurt’s sports infrastructure cake. Of course, the offer would not be complete without a golf course, and fans of sailing will find a perfect sailing area on Lake Wörthersee.

The recreational value in Carinthia’s provincial capital is particularly high. Whether you prefer something more leisurely and let it all hang out, want to enjoy nature or focus on sports – everybody will find something suitable in summer and winter. For water babies and sun-seekers, the largest lakeside lido in Europe on Lake Wörthersee (drinking water quality) is just perfect.

Sportspeople who love competitions and community sport are spoilt with a large number of running events: Carinthia Ironman Austria, Carinthia Runs, Klagenfurt City Half Marathon, Car-free Lake Wörthersee, Klagenfurt Days of Sport and the Business Run, just to name but a few.

“Spazierenschwimmen”

In the eastern bay of Lake Wörthersee you are awaited by one of Europe’s largest inland lakeside lidos. In his time Robert Musil wrote about the lake and walks along its shores - "Spazierenschwimmen". For those who prefer a more quiet place to enjoy the sun, the two smaller lidos “Loretto” and “Maiernigg” are a good opportunity. www.stw.at

Klagenfurt´s hiking routes

Not far from the city center there´s the local recreation area “Kreuzbergl”. Besides a large hiking routes system you can also find a huge children´s playground, nice restaurants, the botanical garden and Klagenfurt´s mining museum.

Those who want to explore the surroundings of the city should try the „Wörthersee Trail“, a trail that leads all around lake Wörthersee. A good opportunity to cath some rays and enjoy nature´s beauty. Click here for more information.

winter activities

Klagenfurt not only offers plenty of activities in summer. It also has a lot on offer in winter. Only five minutes from the city centre, locals and guests alike can enjoy themselves at the ‘Schleppe Alm’ winter sports centre. Alpine skiers, snowboarders and cross-country skiers are very welcome here. Freezing temperatures will invite ice skaters to enjoy skating on the Lendkanal waterway as well as many small lakes. If Lake Wörthersee freezes over, it becomes the largest natural ice skating area in Austria.
