In 2010 Klagenfurt am Wörthersee is a special insider tip for those who love classic music. The 150th birthday of Gustav Mahler will be celebrated duly… As the ideal place for his work he chose Klagenfurt, more precisely Maiernigg, where his Composing house can still be visited. In the summers between 1900 and 1907 he created some of his masterpieces. The “Musikforum Viktring”, the “Jeunesse Kärnten” and the “Wörthersee Classics” honour the artist with a festival of his music. A wonderful day at lake Wörthersee! For the 14th time already bikers and skaters have the possibility to drive around lake Wörthersee – without the usual traffic. The route leads from Klagenfurt to Velden (via the south shores) and back again via the north shores of lake Wörthersee.

Time for football! Klagenfurt´s Wörthersee Stadium is ready for the international match Austria vs. Croatia. Klagenfurt is looking forward to welcome the number 10 of the FIFA-world ranking on May 19th (kick off at 20:30 pm).

In June Klagenfurt turns into the capital of literature. The highlights of the Festival of German-language Literature (Tage der deutschsprachigen Literatur) are readings and discussions focussing on the renowned Ingeborg Bachmann Prize. The literature week starts off with the “Klagenfurt Literature Course” (Klagenfurter Literaturkurs), in which select authors of the future are able to work on their texts together with renowned writers.

Europe’s biggest triathlon starts off in the eastern bay of Lake Wörthersee in Klagenfurt where the “iron men” take part in 3.8 kilometres of swimming, then 180 km of cycling and finally 42.2 km of running – and thousands of fans spur them on along the route!

Old Town Magic Festival
This is the big city festival in Klagenfurt! Magicians, stiltwalkers, jugglers on the streets and in the alleyways, live bands on the squares and thousands of people strolling around are amazed by the magic of the spectacle unfolding before their eyes in Klagenfurt’s old town centre.
In the meantime, visitors can enjoy a delicious snack at one of the many open-air gastronomy stands, or have a cool drink at one of the numerous outdoor bars, then enjoy rummaging around at one of the largest flea markets and jumble sales in Austria – exclusively at the Old Town Magic Festival!

The „Wörthersee Trail“, a new running and hiking event, is taking place in Klagenfurt for the second time. Alongside the beautiful Wörthersee hiking trail participants can either master a 55 km or 30km ultrarun or a 25 km hiking marathon. For families and children the “Family Hiking Day” is the perfect opportunity to get to know lake Wörthersee and the surrounding mountains and hills.
