For many of us, the most beautiful time of the year begins in November, for it is then that the Christkindlmarkt, Klagenfurt´s Christmas Market, once again opens its doors! From November 24th to December 24th, 2008, young and old can enjoy the unique flair of this seasonal event, boasting over 70 market stands and open daily. The stylish, rustic atmosphere, the attractive programme of fringe events for all ages along with the rich variety of foods and drinks that are available have been turing any visit to the Klagenfurt Christmas Market into a memorable experience for more than 15 years.

May I have the next dance? – But, of course! There are all kinds of classic dancing opportunities in Klagenfurt. The Klagenfurt ball calendar presents a wide range of stylish dancing events starting at the beginning of the year and going on till Ash Wednesday. There’s hardly a weekend where you won’t have to polish your dancing shoes…
UEFA EURO 2008T will be the largest event that has ever taken place in Klagenfurt or any of the other venues.
Three matches will be played in the Carinthian provincial capital. The new Wörthersee stadium will experience a great highlight with the European Football Championship.

Klagenfurt turns into the capital of literature in the last week of June. The highlights of the Festival of German-language Literature (Tage der deutschsprachigen Literatur) are readings and discussions focussing on the renowned Ingeborg Bachmann Prize. The literature week starts off with the “Klagenfurt Literature Course” (Klagenfurter Literaturkurs), in which select authors of the future are able to work on their texts together with renowned writers.

Europe’s biggest triathlon starts off in the eastern bay of Lake Wörthersee in Klagenfurt where the “iron men” take part in 3.8 kilometres of swimming, then 180 km of cycling and finally 42.2 km of running – and thousands of fans spur them on along the route!

The City Theatre (Stadttheater) presents a varied programme in the summer season that will enchant you. This year´s highlight will be the musical "Les Misérables".

Tanned sportsmen and women dressed in brightly coloured outfits who dig and spike the ball over the sand court and a great atmosphere among the spectators in the beach volleyball arena. The Beach Volleyball Grand Slam Tournament is the absolute hit of the summer in Klagenfurt. Here top-rank sport and entertainment are closer than in any other place!

The fitness event entitled “Carinthia Runs” (Kärnten Läuft) is a credit to its name. Everyone will find the right level of sports, ranging from a kiddies run to a half marathon on Lake Wörthersee, every length of course and difficulty level is available.

This is the big city festival in Klagenfurt! – Magicians, stiltwalkers, jugglers on the streets and in the alleyways, live bands on the squares and thousands of people strolling around are amazed by the magic of the spectacle unfolding before their eyes in Klagenfurt’s old town centre.
In the meantime, visitors can enjoy a delicious snack at one of the many open-air gastronomy stands, or have a cool drink at one of the numerous outdoor bars, then enjoy rummaging around at one of the largest flea markets and jumble sales in Austria – exclusively at the Old Town Magic Festival!
